Empires & Puzzles is a RPG created by Small Giant Games for mobile platform.
Small Giant recently released a major game update for their game Empires & Puzzles, and our task was to spice up their campaign by developing a series of cinematic scenes. Our approach focused on creating modular and visually striking sequences, rather than delivering a full trailer. These scenes were designed to work both independently or in combination, allowing the Small Giant marketing team to mix and match sequences based on their specific needs and campaign goals.

Our goal was to enhance the emotional depth of the characters, particularly Elena. We focused on humanizing her, shifting her from a detached hero to a character with stronger emotional ties to the dragons and the environment around her.
For the visuals, we employed painterly techniques on 3D models, treating them as canvases rather than relying on realistic textures. By incorporating painted shadows and applying camera-based painting methods, we aimed for a more artistic and stylized look for the scenes.

This is the first full cinematic trailer produced for the game, and we had the pleasure to work in close collaboration with Small Giant Games, writing the script, developing the designs and of course directing, animating and producing the whole film.
This is the first endeavour for Milford to produce a cinematic trailer for a game, and marks a distinct new direction in terms of look and storytelling for the studio. The film is produced entirely in key-frame animation as opposed to motion-capture, since this allowed for more versatile acting and nuanced animation that fit the design and narrative better.
