Gothenburg international film festival is anannual film festival in Gothenburg, Sweden and the largest film event in Scandinavia.
Carta Marina” is a feature quality three-minute“ short produced by Milford to be the opening sequence of Gothenburg International Film Festival. It's not every day that you have the chance to work with an internationally acclaimed actor like Fares Fares bringing your story to life. The dragon, a long-standing icon for the festival, was the other star of the assembly in this epic journey adventure into the dominion of dragons. A charming little creature created by our talented CG-team at Milford.
Our director’s duo Fredrik Falck and Derek Picken worked in close collaboration making this ambitious endeavor come to life. Together with producer Simon Hernadi plans were set up to handle the two days of shooting with a 60+ live action team.

The festival’s marketing manager Karl Svedung pointed out early in the creative process that he wanted the dragon to be charming and appear as a playful yet naturalistic creature in the story, rather than a menacing and scary one. So with that in mind we started working.
During a five-week period, our team researched and produced a highly believable dragon in 3D, as well as animation, interaction, integration, CG fire and set enhancements. The process required many hours of reference collection and exploration of how textures, scales, color and patterns work on actual living animals. Our CG team also took into account the anatomical behavior of the animal to develop a model that worked for the specific acting needs. The introductory helicopter shot also had extensive digital work. For this sequence we were challenged with massive digital extensions, realistic CG water and an eye-catching CG ship. All in all 23 of the shots went through some form of digital treatment.

We did a full CG test with our little creature to explore the interaction between the dragon, water and vegetation.
